Meet Our Staff

Leon Covitz – Executive Director
Leon was born and brought up in Glasgow, Scotland. He earned his B.A in Jewish Studies from Jews College, London and M.A in Jewish Education from the Siegal College of Judaic Studies in Cleveland. He has had extensive experience in both formal and informal Jewish education settings, from being both teacher and administrator in Glasgow, London, Israel, Canada and Washington D.C, when he came to the States as a Bnei Akiva Shaliach – emissary – from Israel.

Leon has participated in over thirty camps and has brought camp ruach and experience to all the schools in which he has worked. He has been involved in Jewish camping, in various capacities, in the United Kingdom, Israel and the United States – where he helped run Camp Moshava in Pennsylvania, as well as summer camps in Los Angeles and Atlanta.

In addition, Leon has a diploma in cow-husbandry from Midreshet Rupin in Israel, and for eight and half years was a dairy farmer on Kibbutz Ma’alei Gilboa. Leon is a graduate of both the Senior Educators Program at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and the Principals’ Center at Bar Ilan University, Tel Aviv.

When he arrived in Atlanta, Leon taught Judaics, at all grade levels, at the Weber High School. In addition he coordinated its informal Jewish experiential programs. At the former Board of Jewish Education in Atlanta Leon instructed, supervised and observed new teachers who were entering into the classroom for the first time.

When Leon moved to Greenfield Hebrew Academy he became the director of Jewish Studies and Jewish Life. Leon taught Talmud, Chumash and History of Israel to both lower and upper middle school. Leon was also responsible for many of the informal Jewish living events – Shabbatonim, Jewish Family education activities, the all-school oneg, and experiential programs for each Jewish festival and life-cycle event. Leon created and taught the History of Israel curriculum and directed the 8th Grade Israel program. Leon has also been director of Judaics at NEMJDS in Birmingham, Alabama. He has also taught at the Melton Adult Education Program.

Currently Leon is a Jewish/Israel educational consultant for the Marcus Foundation, the Israel Democracy Institute, the ICenter and has recently been appointed the director of the Sephardic Adventure Camp in Seattle, Washington.
