S.A.B.T at S.A.C (Shiva Asar B’Tammuz at Sephardic Adventure Camp)

We have just recently broken the fast of Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, the 17th of Tammuz, here at Sephardic Adventure Camp.  Those campers who were fasting filled their bellies with delicious Chinese stir fry and are now headed to the lodge with gooey brownies in hand to watch “Wreck it Ralph.”

Today at S.A.C, our educational director, Sarah Varon, worked hard to plan educational yet entertaining programming for our campers enlightening them on the reasons why we fasted today.  She presented a slideshow that highlighted the five national tragedies that befell the Jewish people on the 17th of Tammuz.  As discussed in yesterday’s blog, these are: Moshe breaking the Luchot, the halting of the Korban Tamid, Apostomos the Greek burning Ezra’s Torah scroll, the Romans breaching the walls to Jerusalem, and the Romans also placing an idol in the Beit HaMikdash.  After Mincha, we heard a story from Chacham Greenberg applicable to the lessons we can derive from this fast day, and then campers enjoyed some special CIT programming.  Campers were tied in the Human Knot and then acted out skits with provided props that were based on the five tragedies that the fast commemorates.  Before the 3s and 4s headed to Arvit, all campers were able to play board games around camp and spend some structured free time with their counselors.

After the relaxing and reflective day today, campers and counselors alike are excited to return to the everyday, jam packed S.A.C schedule tomorrow.  Don’t forget to “like” Sac Camp on Facebook!
